Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922), Irish explorer, born in Kilkee, county Clare, Ireland. He joined (1890) the British merchant navy and in 1901 sailed on his first expedition to Antarctica, with the British explorer Robert Falcon Scott. In 1907 Shackleton commanded the first announced attempt to reach the South Pole. He came within a record-breaking 179 km (111 mi) of his goal on January 9, 1909, reaching latitude 88°23' south. His party also succeeded in climbing the 4023-m (13,200-ft) Mount Erebus. Upon his return that year Shackleton was knighted. From 1914 to 1916 he tried to cross the Antarctic continent from the Weddell Sea, an arm of the South Atlantic Ocean, to the Ross Sea, an arm of the South Pacific Ocean. The expedition was unsuccessful. In 1921 Shackleton undertook his final voyage, a 48,280-km (30,000-mi) journey in the South Atlantic Ocean, but he died before the expedition could be completed. His writings include Heart of the Antarctic (1909) and South (1919), accounts of his expeditions.
